Drake Parker is a young 45-year-old ambitious stockbroker who has gallbladder cancer and it is inoperable. He has maybe a year to live. His tan skin, white teeth, and crooked smile have been his trademark, but now after days of being a shut-in, he can barely recognize the face staring back at him. That’s when he determines it’s time to accept the inevitable. That is also when he makes his bucket list of things he wants to do.

Trinity Hunter is every inch the image of the successful businesswoman with the extra appeal of long hair, almond-shaped eyes, and dimples on her high cheekbones. This camouflage softens a fast-talking take charge businesswoman who is pushy, but fun-loving and sure of herself until she finds out she has a rare cancer, desmoplastic small-round-cell tumor. The cancer has advanced and she is given a year to live.

Parker determined not to give in to depression and self-pity begins work on his bucket lists and on an outing, is run over by the free-spirited Trinity Hunter who is out for a jog on the Lake Ontario boardwalk. The two enjoy a very powerful romance until Parker accidentally learns that Trinity has been keeping a secret from him: She too is dying of terminal cancer.

Two lonely people, both terminally ill, have a short-lived love affair, sharing a series of adventures in which they live out their childhood dreams.

Author Interview with Shanae

Hi Shanae, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
I’m Shinaie Watlington and my pen name is Shanae. I’ve published two books name Loving the Mic and Loving the Jones. I’m working on a new book now that will be out next year.   I’ve been a published author for nearly two years.  After entering a writing contest that Mary B. Morrison created called “Write a book in 90 days”, I wrote my first book and the rest is history.  I’m a mother of two children and a new grandmother. Also, I have worked as a Medical Biller for a hospital for nine years.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?
To write great storylines that people will enjoy and fall in love with.  I want to write stories that people can relate to and be inspired that type of love still exists.

Which writers inspire you?
There are so many of course there are many mainstream writers that inspire me, but the ones I am truly inspired by are the self-published authors or any signed to a smaller publishing company not receiving a lot of buzz.  My pen sister Y.M. Sheree, Xyla Turner, Shakema Haygood, and Heather Rae Brassart are a few that I have had the pleasure of reading, who are amazing writers.

What are you working on at the minute?
I’m writing the last installment of my “Loving” series.  It’s called Loving Myself.  I have written two books about different perspectives on love and this will be the last one to complete it.

What genre are your books and why?
I like to write about Romance.  I still believe in love. Being able to write about it allows me to create the perfect love story.

In 10 words or less can you create a quote that describes you and your writing?
“Love finds you if you open your heart and mind”

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
I have bounced of few around in my head but I think I will settle on Nia Long, Larenz Tate, and Salli Richardson as my main characters.  I really think they could bring out the story I have written.

When did you decide to become a writer?
About a year and a half ago when I entered a 90-day challenge with Mary B. Morrison.

Do you write full-time or part-time?
I write part-time for now.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
I write during the evenings when I get off and as a much as I can on my days off from work.

Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?
Yes, I try to write at least 1,000 words per day.

Where do your ideas come from?
Honestly, I have a crazy imagination. When I begin to write, I take on the life of each one of my characters.  I step into each of the characters shoes and write the story as if I was living out each and every story line as my own.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
I free flow.  When I begin writing my story, I have an initial idea of how I want to portray each character and once their personalities have been created my story begins to evolve.  I make notes along the way but once I start writing the story flows.

How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?
My first book was more reserved because I was nervous about what people would say.   When I began writing “Loving the Jones”, I changed the parameter of a love story and changed the perspective of a normal love affair.  I knew the storyline was going to be edgy, but I put my heart and soul into making sure it was written the way I wanted it regardless of what people would think or say.
What is the hardest thing about writing?
The hardest part is staying focused, making sure I allot the time to writing each and every day which doesn’t always happen when you work a full-time job and have a family.

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?
Writing the sex scenes and bringing out the sensual side that I wanted to portray.

What is the easiest thing about writing?
Coming up with the storylines and developing the characters.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?
It takes me approximately six months

Where can you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
Relaxing on a beach writing a best- selling novel and spending time with my family and friends is within my five year plan.  Mentoring young potential authors and helping them make their dream possible.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Follow my dreams and not listen to anyone that is discouraging you and saying it’s not possible because all things are possible if you put your mind to it.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
Maya Angelou because she was a great author. Her life was so influential and motivational to many women of all colors.

If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?
I know why the caged birds by Maya Angelou.  The story was so raw and real, and it made me realize that you can achieve anything if you stay focused and determined.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Never give up and always be original.  You don’t have to write the same storyline to be successful put your twist on your story and make people want to read it and follow you.

Author Interview: Tesa Erven

Hi Tesa, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
Thank you LaToya for this opportunity. I was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. I currently live in New Jersey with my husband and two kids. I enjoy writing, reading and (shower) singing.
Which writers inspire you?
Back in the mid-nineties, I read Brenda Jackson’s first romance novel; Tonight and Forever. After that, I wanted to create my own love story. I like creating twists of characters being unknowingly connected to each other. It’s a small world and I prove that in my writing style.
What are you working on at the minute?
I just finished writing book 3 for the Loose End Series which is scheduled to be released soon.

In 10 words or less can you create a quote that describes you and your writing?
“Tesa writes love stories with romance, suspense and unexpected twists.”
Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
Actually, I never thought about whom would play the lead character in my book but I could tell you for sure that Queen Latifah could definitely play the supporting character, Sabrina. She has a strong voice that tells it like it is.
When did you decide to become a writer?
I first started writing about ten years ago. It has always been a live long dream of mine that has finally come true. I am an avid reader especially of fiction novels. One day, I just thought to myself, “I can do it.”
Do you write full-time or part-time?
Since I do work a demanding full time job – I write in my spare time. Usually late at night is when I’m most productive. When everyone in the house is asleep, that’s my quiet time.
Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?
I don’t have a set amount of words/pages that I aim for. My mentor suggested that I write at least fifteen minutes a day and that’s what I strive to do.
Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer to just see where an idea takes you?
I prefer to see where an idea takes me. I keep a notebook with me on the go. I start a story in there before scanning it into the computer. I still have a thing for the old fashioned scratch and scribble… I write everything down on paper.
What is the easiest and hardest thing about writing?
I enjoy developing new characters and giving them a voice because each one is uniquely written.  The part of the process I dislike would be sentence structure. As a writer, when the words are flowing I tend to forget to stop and add punctuations. Before I know it, I will have one long paragraph with a few run-on sentences and as a result I have to go back and change it.
What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?
I have a sequel to The Loose End coming out soon and the hardest part about writing that particular book was finding the desire to do it. I never thought it would be a continuing story but since becoming published, I understand now that you appreciate giving the readers what they want.
What is the easiest thing about writing?
For me, the easiest part about writing is when you have a muse that you can build or base a character on. My childhood best friend of 30+ years is inspiration to Sabrina’s character in my book. She happens to have those same character traits of always being there and guiding me that it just makes the story come together in a nice even flow.
Where can you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
I wear many hats (mother, wife, working full-time) and adding author to the mix has become a balancing act. I’m learning how to manage my time so my family can see the added value whether it be now or 5 years from now as I fulfill my dream.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
DO NOT GIVE UP! Though it tarries, the vision is near, be patient and wait for it!
- Habakkuk 2:2-3
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Proofread your own work even if you have an editor or an actual proofreader that has read it for you. Invest in yourself, read it again until you get to a point where you feel it is the best you can do.

Author Interview with Inge Saunders

LaToya: Hi Inge, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
Inge: Thank you for having me again LaToya. It’s great to be here again. For those who don’t know I’m a South African romance author, and I live in the biggest small town in SA. According to Wikipedia *smile*

LaToya: What genre are your books and why?
Inge: I have two contemporary romances published with Decadent Publishing, Falling for Mr. Unexpected and Dance of Love. But I also love to write paranormal romances, and have recently contracted a novella, The Wolf’s Choice for Decadent’s popular Black Hills Wolves series. I like a good love story and have always gravitated more towards the romance genre in my reading. So when I put pen to paper I wanted to explore this human condition in all its facets.

LaToya: In 10 words or less can you create a quote that describes you and your writing?
Inge: Sweet flirty romances with an emotional impact.

LaToya: Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
Inge: I’ve taught myself to write at any time of day where I can create space in my daily schedule. But I am a night owl by nature, so I can start writing in the evening until late at night and not even be aware of how late it is.

LaToya: Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?
Inge: I have a 1K fixed word count for when I sit down to write, if I meet that I’m okay.

LaToya: Where do your ideas come from?
Inge: My latest story, The Wolf’s Choice, was such a surprise to me. Because it came from such a pure place where it was just about telling the story of these two people who fell in love with each other at an inconvenient time. The opening scene of the first chapter literally played out for months in my mind before I wrote it down. The characters were fully fleshed out already. And I’ve never had that type of experience before when writing. Usually I get inspired by what happens around me, the movies I watch, books I read, friends, family, etc. This time it was just pure story and now I kind of ‘fight’ emotionally and mentally to reach that pure place of storytelling.

LaToya: Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
Inge: Usually I write an outline, the pitch and sales hook for the story. That grounds me for the first four to five chapters of the story. After that when I have a good grip on who the characters are and their motivations, I work on a synopsis. Though I have to add, I never stick completely to the synopsis, I give myself that room to be creative.

Inge: If you want to write for a publisher or get a literary agent, than creating outlines and knowing how to write a synopsis will benefit you. The synopsis, pitch or query letter, with your first three chapters, sells your book. So plotting out your book/ideas is part of being an author. It’s good to get this skill down early in your career.

LaToya: What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?
Inge: I’ve never tackled a love scene before. To prepare myself for it, I did a lot of research and read article upon article. I made sure I absorbed enough information and then focused my characters and who they were. In the end everything flowed and I wrote the scene out and in the context of who they were. For me a love scene has to make sense in a story. In The Wolf’s Choice, it was directly linked to one of the main character’s acceptance new their identity. I do believe when you as the author connect with that scene you don’t feel confident to write, it Inge: Inge: overcomes that barrier you feel as ‘hard’ and you evolve as an author and learn new things about the craft.

LaToya: What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Inge: The breakthrough in my writing came when I joined Romance writers’ Organization of South Africa (ROSA).  In our Yahoo group, I gained a lot of great advice on my first manuscript and met the editor who contracted my first romance book I wrote because I shared the first chapter of my work with the writing group. So my first bit of advice is, join a writing organization or association in your town, city or country.

The second is scout the internet, especially social media platforms. Next year I’m hosting the ROSA Online Book Fair on Facebook in June 2017. These types of events are great opportunities to interact with authors that you admire in the category that you liked to write in. Usually events like this provide Q&A’s, etc. And the best thing, it happens online which means you can attend from the convenience of your home, ‘meet’ authors and learn about the publishing industry.

And lastly, study. Yes, becoming a good writer doesn’t happen by magic. Study your craft, the same way you would study for a degree. That’s what makes your writing better and also helps you to grow as an author.

Author Interview with Kim Golden

LaToya: Hi Kim, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
Kim:  I was born and raised in Philadelphia, but now Stockholm, Sweden is my home. I moved here back in 1995 for love and I am still here for love. I studied literature at Temple University, received an MFA in Creative Writing from Virginia Commonwealth University. When I’m not writing fiction, I work as a senior copywriter for a Swedish cosmetics company called Oriflame. I love traveling and I probably spend nearly all of my disposable income on it. I want to see the world.

LaToya: What are your ambitions for your writing career?
Kim:  I want to write stories that make people feel emotional reactions. I used to dream of hitting the bestsellers lists—and it’s still something I aspire to—but my main ambition is to keep writing and reaching more people.

LaToya: Which writers inspire you?
Kim: There are so many! I usually tell people that my holy trinity of writers consists of Ernest Hemingway, Toni Morrison and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I love their writing styles and the stories they tell. I also get huge bursts of inspiration from reading Tia Kelly and Nia Forrester’s novels. I am a huge fan of their work. Karen Siplin and Abigail Bosanko have also inspired me, as have Dorothy Koomson, Xio Axelrod, Rebecca Hunter, Nana Malone and Delaney Diamond.

LaToya: What are you working on at the minute?
Kim: I’m preparing for the June release of Maybe Tomorrow, which is a standalone in the Maybe… series. I’m also working on two new books—another standalone in the Maybe… series called Maybe Now and a more SciFi-esque love story called Under the Milky Way. Hopefully both books will be done by the end of the year—not sure of any release dates though since it’s still early days.

LaToya: What genre are your books and why?
Kim: I write women’s fiction with romantic elements. My books end up being labeled as romances, since the love story is always in focus—but I don’t really follow the rules of romance, which can annoy readers. My characters misbehave. Sometimes they cheat, sometimes they go out of their way to make things worse in their attempts to make things better. They screw up. And sometimes it’s not clear if there will be an HEA. I like love stories that feel real. I read to have new experiences, so I like bringing authenticity and real life problems into my fiction.

LaToya: In 10 words or less can you create a quote that describes you and your writing?
Kim: Kim is like her books: messy, optimistic, quiet yet emotional.

LaToya: Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
Kim: I think Nicole Beharie would be perfect as Eddy from Maybe Tomorrow. She’s who I pictured nearly the entire time I was writing the book. And her Danish love interest would be her former Sleepy Hollow co-star, Tom Mison. He was always Henrik for me.

LaToya: When did you decide to become a writer?
Kim: My mom would say I’ve always been a writer. Even when I was a kid, I wrote stories. I went through a brief period when I was more interested in design and architecture, but I ended up coming back to writing. I started truly seeing writing as my dream when I was in high school.

LaToya: Do you write full-time or part-time?
Kim: I write part-time. I wish I could write full-time, but that will have to wait another year or two. I need a few more books under my belt before I finally take the plunge.

LaToya: Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
Kim:  Since I still work full-time, I have to fit my writing around my day job. I get up every morning at around 6AM and try to write for at least 30 minutes. If it’s a good writing day, I get an hour in by writing while I eat breakfast. I also try to get another 30 minutes to an hour of writing done when I come home from work. It all depends on how tired I am when I come home from work.

But I think I get most of my writing done during the weekend. Then I usually write all afternoon—usually in my favorite local cafĂ©—and then I take a break for a few hours to hang out with my husband. And then I start again in the evening unless we’ve decided to watch a movie together or something like that.

LaToya: Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?
Kim: I aim for at least 1600 words per day, but some days I don’t get more than 300 words written. It all depends how easily I can extract the words from my brain. Some days are better than others.

LaToya: Where do your ideas come from?
Kim:  Real life inspires me. I people watch, I eavesdrop, I observe. Sometimes an article in the newspaper can inspire me, or a snatch of conversation can give birth to an idea. Sometimes it’s simply something about someone who passes by that can spark an idea.

LaToya: Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
Kim:  I outline, but I don’t follow my outline religiously. I like to allow the story to take me where it wants to go. I just rein it in when I think we’ve veered too far off course.

LaToya: How do you think youve evolved creatively?
Kim: When I first began writing, I wrote to please only the readers. I didn’t really think about whether I liked my story. Then one day I realized that I needed to feel more connected with my stories and characters if I wanted readers to feel the same. And when I began writing what I wanted to read and telling stories that spoke to me, I felt like I became a better writer.

LaToya: What is the hardest thing about writing?
Kim: Staying focused. It’s so easy to get distracted. I find I write best when I am on vacation or at least away from my usual daily routine. That change of environment is liberating.

LaToya: What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?
Kim: Actually finishing it and letting it go. It was the first time in ages that I was writing without an outline. And when I first began writing it, it was more just a way to clear my head so I could work on something else, but I fell in love with my characters and their story. It started off as a short story, then grew to novella length. And then I realised I’d written most of a novel without ever intending to do so. It was just hard to let go of it.

LaToya: What is the easiest thing about writing?
Kim:  Falling in love with the characters you create. I love my characters, even when they’re being complete pains in the neck, I love them.

LaToya: How long on average does it take you to write a book?
Kim:  When I write my first draft during NaNoWriMo, it takes a month to have a quick and dirty first draft and then another three or four months to tweak it until I feel happy with it. My upcoming novel took over a year to get it right.

LaToya: Where can you see yourself in 5 yearstime?
Kim:  Hopefelly, living somewhere warmer than Sweden with my gorgeous guy, working on a future bestseller.

LaToya: What advice would you give to your younger self?
Kim:  Don’t listen to your parents when they tell you that writing is a hobby, not a job. Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams. And, yes, you should travel and go beyond the boundaries of your normal life.

LaToya: Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
Kim:  Shonda Rhimes. I love her shows, love the dialogue and the conflicts she creates. I would love to just sit and talk writing with her. And convince her to produce the Maybe… series into a TV series or a movie.

LaToya: If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?
Kim: Whenever I re-read Such a Girl by Karen Siplin or A Nice Girl Like Me by Abigail Bosanko, I wish I could have written those stories. Both novels ring true and their characters are interesting and compelling. I get book hangovers from them. :-)

LaToya: What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Kim: Write the stories you want to read. Don’t change your writing to suit other people’s whims. Stay true to your story.
