Author Interview with Dayo

Hi Dayo, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
Hi, LaToya. Thanks for having me on your blog. So, a little about me. I love to tell stories, and have always had a pretty vivid imagination. If I didn’t write my wild imagination would just go to waste so I view writing as a necessity for me J Despite the fact that most of my books are set in America, I live in North West England with my lovely husband and our two daughters.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?
There are the obvious goals of hitting bestseller lists and having books turned into movies and all that. But my priority is to continually improve so that I can consistently put out awesome books. I want to blow people’s minds with my stories.

Which writers inspire you?
There are so many so I’ll just choose one. C.S. Lewis. I read his books as a child and I think he’s amazing.

What are you working on at the minute?
I’m currently writing the final book of my ‘The Dare’ trilogy. It’s called The Gamble. But I’m also plotting about six other books so that once I finish The Gamble I can immediately jump into writing another book. I never feel quite right unless I have a work in progress.

What genre are your books and why?
I write in so many genres within the inspirational fiction umbrella: YA, contemporary romance, romantic thrillers and supernatural thrillers. I’m so lucky that my readers don’t mind my genre-hopping.

In 10 words or less can you create a quote that describes you and your writing?
Fast-paced, edgy and addictive J

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
This is a tough question. I think I’d like Jessica Alba or Yaya Dacosta to play any of my female leads from any of my books. Nathan Owens can play any of my male leads.

When did you decide to become a writer?
I’ve always wanted to write, but didn’t finish a full length book until I was 19. When I finished that first book I decided that writing was the thing for me. It was what I wanted to do.

Do you write full-time or part-time?
I’m full time, yay! It took a lot of hard work to be able to get to a point where I could go full time. It’s such a blessing to be able to do what I love every single day.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
I have two young daughters so there’s no structure at the moment. But I do try to write every day, or at least edit something I’ve already written. It’s chaos at the moment, but I’m making it work for me.

Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?
It depends on the day. My minimum target is usually 3000 words. But I sometimes target 5000 or 10,000 words. 10,000 words in a day sounds crazy but it’s totally doable, especially if I’m excited about what I’m writing.

Where do your ideas come from?
I have an overactive imagination. Plot and character ideas are constantly popping into my mind. Also, storylines are everywhere: conversations, news items, songs. Everything is inspiration.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer to just see where an idea takes you?
I outline very extensively. I can’t imagine working any other way. My outlines are often over ten pages long. I think writers who just ‘see where things go’ as they write are especially gifted.

How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?
Something I realized recently is that I’m not as afraid as I used to be of tackling sensitive issues, or even of just being ‘real’ with my writing. I used to censor myself a lot. Now I’m a little braver.

LaToya: What is the hardest thing about writing?
Editing. I really don’t enjoy editing my books. I love the writing part, but once a book is written the work has only just begun.

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book, The Dare?
Some of the themes of the book were tricky. It’s a contemporary romance, but the main character finds out that her mom is not the role model she thought she was, and has a hard time dealing with that. I work as a mentor to young people so I wrote this book to encourage young people and hopefully portray the destructive behaviors that they need to avoid.

What is the easiest thing about writing?
I find brainstorming a new book so much fun: coming up with the plot and generating ideas and cool ways to twist things and entertain readers while also weaving in some moral or inspirational message.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?
My first book took me nine months, but I’m on my 27th book now and I’ve steadily gotten faster. I’ve written a book in as little as two weeks, but that’s not the norm. The norm is about a month for me these days.

Where can you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
I’d like to have at least 50 books out and I’d like to be serving a wider audience. More books and more readers, that’s it for me J

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Good question. I’d tell myself to calm down about all the things that I think are big issues, because they’re not. I’d also tell myself to focus God and on writing. And I’d tell myself to study something to do with writing, creativity or Literature in university rather than Molecular Biology with Genetics (which, sadly, is what I studied).

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
I would love to meet Enid Blyton and pick her brain about productivity and being prolific. I know she wrote well over 700 novels which is just incredible. I’ve read her Famous Five series and some of her Secret Seven books. They kept me up late into the night as a child. She was amazing.

If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?
I would love to be the author of The Chronicles of Narnia because they’re just awesome books that have layers of deep meanings. So cool.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Writers write, so write often. It’s the only way you’re going to improve. And be patient with yourself. You’ll make mistakes and you’ll have off-days, but don’t let that stop you. Keep your eye on your goals and keep gunning for them.

Author Interview with Mary Ann Finley

Hi Mary Ann Finley, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
Hello, and thanks for inviting me. I’m an independent author and the founder, operator and CEO of Mayrann Speaks Productions, L.L.C. I didn’t get into writing as a career until I was 48 years old, and wrote my initial novel, Thicker Than Blood, as a therapeutic way to overcome the grief of losing my mother in 2009. I’ve published three books besides that one: Corn Rowing Mama’s Hair on a Sunday (poetry), Somebody Say Grace (spiritual meditations), and Thicker Than Blood II: The Rahsurrection, which just went on sale December 12, 2016. January 1, 2017 I began collaborating with other authors who solicited my services, and their books will be published under my subsidiary company, McCurtain Press. That’s so exciting to me. I’m also an ordained minister with 23 years of experience.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?
I’ve always dreamed of having one of my works turned into a cinematic production or television series. I’m working with a film producer, Annette Colbert-Latham, CEO of Visage Productions Inc., toward making that dream come to fruition within the next 5 years. Slowly but surely we’re making progress in meeting that goal. Patience is definitely needed in this industry.

Which writers inspire you?
Anyone who knows me well knows the love of my reading and writing life is Walter Mosley. Second to him is the late, great August Wilson. These two wonderful writers have given me life down through the years. My goal was to meet them both in my lifetime, yet August went on before. I still hope to one day shake Walter’s hand and thank him for being such an important influence on my career as an author.

What are you working on at the minute?
I have contracted to be ghostwriter for two biographical books and currently working on finalizing both for publication under McCurtain Press by March 1, 2017.

What genre are your books and why?
Family Drama and mystery/suspense are my favorite genres to write. I find it easy to keep readers on their toes with those genres. The element of surprise is something I love when reading a novel, and I deliver that best within those two genres as an author. Although I have decided my next novel will be a romance, just to switch it up a little.

In 10 words or less can you create a quote that describes you and your writing?
An author whose novels are good to the last period!

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
The lead characters in the Thicker Than Blood series are three brothers: Patrick ‘Tip’ Collier, whom I would love for Daniel Carlton, this awesome veteran actor from Harlem, to portray, Gerald Lamar Jr., whom I see maybe Idris Elba portraying, and Ramon ‘Rah-Money’ Lamar, whom I haven’t quite figured out which actor would be best at portraying, perhaps Dwayne Johnson. Doesn’t that sound like a blockbuster cast?

When did you decide to become a writer?
My writing fascination began at age 8, when I wrote a little short story and my sister, Edith, loved it. Poetry is my first love and it seems like I’ve written a million poems in my lifetime on various subjects.

Do you write full-time or part-time?
In December, 2015 I became fulltime self-employed as an author, copy editor, and proofreader.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
I do my writing when it hits me. My muse is special. I could be up all wee hours of the morning writing, which happens more than not.

Do you aim for a set number of words/pages per day? Yes, I’ve gotten into the habit of writing 2 chapters a day, regardless to the length. My writing is best when I take my time.

Where do your ideas come from? My ideas come mainly from having lived over 5 decades and experiences I’ve had or know others have gone through.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you? I mainly see where the idea takes me; however, on this last novel I did work with an outline for the second and third parts of the book. It really depends on where my muse takes me.

How do you think you’ve evolved creatively? Since writing my first novel I’ve come to realize less can definitely be more. If I can convey an idea fully with fewer words the novel tends to flow smoother.

What is the hardest thing about writing? Editing, editing, editing—being told to ‘cut out little darlings’ is one thing that will sure get a writer out of his/her ego!

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book? Writing the sequel was a little more difficult because I didn’t want to rehash too much of the first novel. Yet I had to give enough of it so the sequel stood on its own and didn’t confuse the readers. The sequel puts closure to the story that began in the initial novel.

What is the easiest thing about writing? Ideas flow freely for me. I always have a story in my head and characters telling me it’s time for them to be introduced to the world. Yes, that is the insanity of being a writer.

How long on average does it take you to write a book? Once I get going I normally finish within at least 3 months time. It’s the ‘get going’ part that takes me awhile sometimes.

Where can you see yourself in 5 years’ time? Walking into the premier of Thicker Than Blood—the movie version or having a watch party for the television series premier.

What advice would you give to your younger self? I’d advise my younger self to come out of her shell, know she’s beautifully and wonderfully made by The Most High, and own her gifts because tomorrow’s not guaranteed.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why? Ms. Oprah Winfrey is my number one hero in the entertainment world. She’s withstood the test of time, other people’s ignorance and prejudice and is still going strong, reaching higher heights. That sistah is boss! I hope to meet her some day.

If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why? Wow, that’s a hard question. Hmm, there are many, but The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson tops them. Her research into the migration of blacks from the south to the north was incredible and she laid out their stories in such a manner that each one touches a special place in my mind and heart.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers? Research your craft. Make sure you know what a professional book looks like; both in content and physical aspects, so even an agent or traditional publisher will be impressed. Always have your book edited and proofread, so as to put out the quality that will keep readers coming back for more. Being a published author is more than about telling a great story. We never know in whose hands our work will end up. Not everyone who reads your work will like it, so what? This industry requires thick skin. Do this mainly because you love it. Realize most don’t get wealthy from being an author. Always be supportive of other authors. There’s enough room for everyone at the table. Write on!

Author Interview with Tamara Wellons-Blanks

Hi Tamara, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
I am Tamara Wellons-Blanks, born in Albany, GA, raised and residing in Cordele, GA.  I have been married, presently divorced and the mother of three beautiful daughters.  My daughters are Tamiya, Tia and Tamryn.  Tamiya and Tia are twins and they will be graduating in 2017.  Tamryn is the youngest and a high school freshman.

I am a member of the Cordele Institutional Church of God in Christ in Cordele, GA.  I graduated from Crisp County High School.  I am a certified Electrocardiograph Technician.  I attended several colleges, obtaining credits in business administration and management and working full-time.  Eventually, I had to stop college and work full-time to take care of my daughters.  Being a single mother has not been easy, but it is definitely worth it.  I would not change one obstacle that slowed my progressiona because no matter the issue, I never stopped striving.  I finally realized I needed to start applying the skills and knowledge I had obtained, instead of having it to the side waiting for the next opportunity for school.  After coming to that realization, I was able to obtain employment in management, business administration and secretarial work in different businesses.  I can honestly say, walking around with knowledge and skills are no good unless you decide apply them.

Writing has been one of my dearest passions nearly my entire life.  I never stopped writing poetry, short stories, jotting down ideas, no matter what I was doing.  The dream and long term goal of becoming a published author remained alive within me.  Whenever I felt an inspiration, I would write.  Knowing inspiration could come at any time, I have always tried to keep a pen and journal or notepad with me.

My parents, siblings and family have always been supportive.  We are not the perfect family, but we love each other and when one is in need, we are there for them.  In our family, we are taught to work hard for what we want and to have faith and strive to achieve it.  My life has never been perfect or easy, but to look back at where I have come from...all I can say is God is real and God is good all the time, through each and every good and bad circumstance.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?
I want to be a successful published author.  I want to inspire children to become more involved with reading and learning to expand their knowledge.  I want to inspire more adults to read.  I guess one could say my ambitions for my writing career are using my passion and for purpose.  Writing is my passion, I have written many days without purpose, however I now have a purpose with my passion.  If I can publish a book that can intrigue a reader, or even better a non-reader, my purpose for writing is beneficial.

Which writers inspire you?
Edgar Allan Poe, Stephen King, Maya Angelou, Zane, Langston Hughes, Alice Walker, Frederick Douglass, Mark Twain and Harper Lee.  Each of these writers have their own unique style and usage of words that captures my attention.  I am also inspired by the way they use(d) their platforms for greater good.  If one was to read the biographies of these authors, they would be intrigued by the obstacles they have faced and overcame.  Some were rejected continuously, however they never stopped writing and being persistent.  Others used their writing to uplift, encourage, entertain and/or bring the ignored realities to the forefront that need attention.  Keeping it short, they are inspirational because they make me think, "What and how can I write to keep readers interested in my work now and later?  What can I write that may possibly bring a positive change?  What can I do that will not just benefit me but others as well?"  These writers have made and are making an impact with their creativity, their humbleness to contribute to positive change and individuality.  Also, the writers that I have the pleasure of networking and speaking with personally.  To see first-hand of writers that have tenure in their writing careers is very inspirational.  To witness their drive, dedication and growth encourages me to keep pushing.

What are you working on at the minute?
I am presently working on several projects, which include another chidren's book, Biblical ABC Learning 2.  I am also working my first series, entitled Single Mother Diaries.  Presently, I am unsure of the number of installations, however I have eight diaries that I am working on so far.  Last, but not least, more poetry compilations.

What genre are your books and why?
Children/youth is one genre of books.  I feel it is important for children to begin reading and enjoying books as soon as possible.  I am able to give more options for children to read and learn and that is a blessing.  Poetry is another genre.  I like poetry because there are so many creative ways to express yourself or convey a point.  There are many quotes and memes about writing, but the one that sticks out the most with me is, "Poetry is a way to tell a story without using complete sentences."  I enjoy writing urban fiction.  I like this genre because in my opinion, it tells the stories of some realities, giving them a fictional twist for intrigue and delight.

In 10 words or less can you create a quote that describes you and your writing?
Keepin' It Roaring

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
My most recent publication was a poetry book containing no characters, obviously.  But I would like to hear James Earl Jones read the Poetic Mind section of Poetic Compilations of the Heart, Mind and Soul.  We already know he has a resounding voice and I think he would nail that section in Spoken Word!

When did you decide to become a writer?
I have always been passionate about writing pretty much my entire life.  My first love was poetry.  I enjoyed writing short stories, essays, book reports, just anything that allowed me to be creative with my pen or pencil.  I entered poetry contests and actually won several times.  I decided I wanted to become a published writer around 15 or 16 years old.  Now, 20+ years later, after marriage, three kids, divorce, more education and experience in business, I am finally a published writer/author.

Do you write full-time or part-time?
Mostly full-time.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
I accomplish the most writing at night, when everyone is asleep.  I also try to get a few lines or stanzas written throughout the day, but I spend daylight hours mostly networking, promoting, editing and brainstorming.  I probably have a dozen notebooks, literally, that I use for notes, ideas, jotting down professional connections, etc.

Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?
No I do not.  I prefer to concentrate on the content of the project(s) I am working on, as opposed to the amount of words/pages per day.

Where do your ideas come from?
I love reading and I do not limit myself to specific genres.  I also have a vivid imagination!

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
It all depends on the type of project I am working on.  If I am working on poetry or a children's book, it is more of seeing how far creativity takes me.  However, outlines and plot creations are very necessary when I am working on projects with characters.

How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?
I think I have evolved creatively a good 20%.  I know that 20% does not seem to be a lot.  However, there is so much more to writing than just, writing.  You have to think of book covers, bios, target audiences, marketing techniques, promotional tactics, illustrations and so much more.  In the beginning, I was thinking creativity goes beyond just writing a book.  Now, as my journey progresses, I KNOW creativity goes beyond just writing a book.  I am proud of my little 20% (lol).  I have so much more to learn and I am looking forward to the challenges.

What is the hardest thing about writing?
The hardest thing for me sometimes is my choice of words, depending on the type of book.  I have to remind myself, "I am a writer because I can express myself, my way.  Regardless of my choice of words, there will always be something bad found in the good and something good found in the bad."

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?
My latest book is a poetry compilation so I am going to piggyback off of the previous answer.  My choice of words in some of the poems.

What is the easiest thing about writing?
The easiest thing about writing for me is going through the thought process, creating ideas.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?
Depending on the type of book, eight months minimum to about three years, so far.

Where can you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
I do not want to limit myself in writing, so I can see myself having books published in a variety of genres to reach more readers.  I want my name, Tamara Wellons-Blanks or Dandii_Lion to be an option in as many genres as possible.  If I am not already operating a bookstore, I can see it being in the making.  Either an online bookstore or an actual bookstore in my hometown of Cordele, GA, if not both.  I can see myself having a readers group for kids.  I want kids to become more interested in reading.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
My advice to my younger self would be to be more responsible.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
I would like to meet Cicely Tyson.  She is one of my role models.  Her vitality, her persistence, her will, her humbleness, the list goes on, are all admirable characteristics.  She takes a powerful stand as a black woman.  I would like to know about the obstacles she faced and overcame being an african american woman.  Everyone has a different story, a different motivation and I would like to know her story, personally.  Just to be in her presence would be an inspiration blessing.

If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?  I know this is so way back and weird, but, "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Allan Poe.  This story has been one of my favorites and most intriguing since I was in high school.  I am amazed with his use of imagery and personification as he tells the story of the Usher family house.  The offset relationship between the brother and sister.  The lover willing to save the sister.  It's depressing, intriguing, hopeful for love, somewhat suspenseful and maniacally genius.  I still read this story today.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Above all else, keep God first in all that you do.  Don't be afraid to learn or seek help/advice.  Never have the mindset that you already know everything, there is always something more to learn.  The only limits are the limits you place on yourself.  Be humble, be consistent, be supportive and never stop reaching for the goals you have set for yourself.
