Author Interview with Paulette Harper

Who is Paulette?
As a bestselling, award winning author, and coach, Paulette has authored six books, including her award winning book Completely Whole. She is a gifted inspirational speaker and workshop facilitator.  She has appeared on Television and countless radio shows sharing her faith and her expertise to the listening audience. She has been a contributing writer for Real Life Magazine, Black Pearl Magazine and CBN.

Paulette, tell us about your writing journey?
My writing journey started in 2007 with my first non-fiction book, That Was Then, This is Now which was published in 2008. I would have to confess, I’m a late bloomer when it comes to writing. I didn’t grow up with a passion or desire to write or to become an author. In fact, I didn’t have any author friends, who I could get words of wisdom from, or advice. But with a nudge from the Lord and plenty of experiences about life, I accepted the challenge and begin writing. Nine years later, I’ve written six books and I write in various genres including Christian nonfiction, fiction and a children books. My spiritual roots enables me to write books that inspire, encourage and strengthen readers, while the desire to write fiction has enabled me to write stories that entertain.

Paulette tells why do you write?
As an inspirational and fiction writer, I write to inspire and empower readers. I write because I feel I have message to share with readers not only to entertain readers but to help them grow spiritually. I love to mix real life stories into my fiction. Although each story is unique, we experience some of the same feelings, situations and challenges in life in which the reader can identify.

With the ability to craft fiction books, it gives me the opportunity to live through each character. I’ve been blessed to write in several different genres: Christian fiction, nonfiction and children. Although each genre is unique in their own way, I enjoy each one. Developing a craft for writing is an ongoing process. I’ve been able to gleam from so many others. I read books which help me learn the craft as well.

When I pen a non-fiction book, I can go deep into my soul and the soul of the reader. My non-fiction books come from my own personal life experiences, research and biblical studies. I try to connect with readers in a place where the words in the book can leap off the pages and bring about a spiritual change as well as spiritual growth.  Everyone needs to be inspired, empowered and strengthen in every area of their lives and this is where my books are able to touch the readers.

Please tell us about your newest release and where the idea came from?
My work in progress is my first inspirational fiction romance novel, Secret Places Revealed. I love reading romance books and writing a story that brings two people together for the sake of finding love was something I thoroughly enjoyed. Aaron Blackman is not looking for love, in fact the only thing he has on his agenda is adding to his Real Estate Development portfolio, while Simone Herron has her own internal battles with trust and abandonment. One decision on her part leads her to meet the eligible bachelor who is smitten by her, but has made a vow to himself not to get involved.
I’ve always wanted to write fiction and the idea behind Secret Places Revealed came from a desire to write my own love story.

Synopsis

A broken man, a woman on the run, a love that won’t be denied.
Single—and very content--real estate developer Aaron Blackman is determined not to be in another relationship. He’s experienced enough drama to last a lifetime. The only thing garnering his attention now is his growing business. And he plans to keep it that way. Then Simone Herron waltzes into his life, beautiful and confident. Fighting to keep his promise to himself—to remain single-- he soon discovers that when it comes to love, some promises must be broken.

After losing her fiancé in an untimely death, Simone Herron relocates. She desperately needs to put the past behind her and start a new chapter in her life. While love is the farthest thing from her mind, she experiences an attraction to the handsome Aaron Blackman that frightens her. She's built a wall around her heart, but can she find the strength and courage she needs to welcome love again? To do so, she must conquer her fears and allow God to put all of her broken pieces back to together.

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing a book?
My single biggest challenge I face when writing is staying focus. With other distractions pulling for my time it takes sheer determination not to stray away from my goals and deadlines.

Where can people connect with you?

Increasing Your Author Platform with Paulette Harper

Increasing Your Author Platform

As an author building your platform is one of the most important things you must do, especially if you are a first time author.  I tell my clients to budget for marketing and promoting. There is nothing worse than an author saying…. “I don’t have money to market my book.” Believe me as a published author and workshop facilitator, I have heard it all. If you want people to take you serious as an author, you must be able to invest in your book by marketing and promoting it. That mean you must spend money.

With the internet, your online presence has a very broad reach. If you built it successfully, it can spread great awareness of you as an author and gain you fans, followers, leads, customers and anything else you could ever want for your book and or services.

Your online presence could consist of a website, blog, social media profiles, article writing and or becoming a columnist for a magazine. Building an online present is about been seen in as many places as one can.

I must tell you it requires work. Actually writing the book is the easiest part an author can do. The marketing and promoting is almost a full time job. Consistency is one of the keys to gaining attention to your work.

One of the ways in which you, as an author can gain exposure and build your online present is with a Virtual Book Tour. As the owner of Write Now Literary Virtual Book Tours, I have helped many authors gain exposure, connect with host of radio shows and build a reader base for life.
Remember this is an investment in you.

What is a Virtual Book Tour?
A virtual book tour features authors promoting their books by making guest appearances during a set time frame on blogs, podcasts, radio shows, social networks, or other venues. These tours are sometimes called book blog tours or virtual author tours, or abbreviated as VBT.
The locations where the author is making appearances are called tour stops, and the blog owners or interviewers are called tour hosts.
Tours are often done as part of the launch of a new book, but they can be successful any time after the book is published. They are just as effective for fiction and nonfiction books — only the venues and the type of content will vary.

Why Authors Should Do a Virtual Book Tour
The purpose of a virtual book tour is to enhance the author's platform and reputation through increased online exposure, drive traffic to the author's website and to build relationships with key influencers.
What are the benefits of doing a VBT?
Ø  Virtual tours are generally less expensive and time consuming than travelling.

Ø  Authors can reach far more people and a more targeted audience with a virtual tour.

Ø  The virtual tour provides quality, lasting links to the author's website. These links have search engine optimization value and may continue to provide new visitors to the author’s website for months or years to come.

What makes a successful tour?
Well the success of a tour depends on who you ask and what the goals are for having a book tour. If an author is looking just for sales, then they might be disappointed with the results. I can’t guarantee book sales, but I can guarantee an author will get the exposure.

An effective virtual book tour can be composed of a number of different kinds of  “content,” including: Guest blog posts, book excerpts, book reviews, interviews, podcast or radio appearance, book giveaways, trailers, Facebook chats, and social media contests.

What we do at WNL?
Our job is to create buzz for your book and get you the publicity you need though bloggers and radio interviews.  As an author, I know the importance of publicity and marketing. Throughout the years, I have made great connections and friendships with authors and bloggers who will help me promote you.

Testimonial to our services.
“Three words to describe Paulette Harper and WLN tours. Efficient, fast and stress free. Well that’s four words, but you get my drift. I told her what I needed and she gave me the perfect product—a book blast. She didn’t try to sell me what I didn’t need. And the results were great. If you are an author looking for a stress free (yeah there goes that word again) exposure you want to know Paulette Harper.”

Unoma Nwankwor, Amazon, Best-Selling  Author,When You Let Go & Owner KevStel Group LLC

The exposure: Before the tour, I would look up my book and maybe see one or two references on the first page. Ever since the tour, I’ve taken up several spots via the first three pages of Google. This is a direct result of the tour. Images as well as blog interviews showed up. This was extremely important for me for SEO purposes.

Author Services: Marketing… Yes!!! You Can’t Live Without It with Paulette Harper

Marketing… Yes Can’t Live Without It

When I wrote my first book, That Was Then, This Is Now, I was under the impression that my publisher was going to promote my book.  I soon found out that the publisher was only going to give a fraction of the time in helping me promote and market my book.  Given the limited resources I had, I believe I did a great job of breaking into the market, making people aware of my presence. Here are a few things to do to get started.

1. Send review copies of your books to book clubs and to all the journal and magazines that review books in your genre.  Most publishers will do this, but it never hurts to research other places that you can submit a copy of your book. There are plenty of places on-line that will review your book for “free”.

2. Create a web page for the book. Now you can exchange links and drive traffic to the site with comments, blogs, quotes, and excerpts. Be sure to have buy links available.

3. Offer sample chapter as free downloads on your website. This is an excellent way to “tease” readers to want more. Make sure the chapters you are offering are your best chapters, and turn those chapters into PDF files.

4. Offer yourself for interviews on radio. Most radio stations are eager to interview newly-published authors.

5. Create a launch page for your book.

Author Interview with Vivian Kay

LaToya: Hi Vivian, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
Vivian: Hello LaToya. I’m a debut Christian author living in Ontario Canada. I’m a wife, mom of three and a therapist in Children’s Mental Health. I enjoy singing, dancing and playing lots of scrabble.

LaToya: What are your ambitions for your writing career?
Vivian: I would love to be able to write more novels on a full-time basis, expand my readership and see one of my books made into a movie.

LaToya: Which writers inspire you?
Vivian: Unoma Nwankwor’s one of the most prolific writers I know. I also enjoy reading novels from Michelle Simpson. Her Mama B character is a gem. Jodi Picoult is also a favorite because of the themes she explores in her books.

LaToya: What are you working on at the minute?
Vivian: A sequel to Secret Places and a couple of short stories.

LaToya: What genre are your books and why?
Vivian: I write Christian/Women’s fiction. My writing often explores issues that are important to me. My faith and worldview shapes the way I process these issues.

LaToya: In 10 words or less can you create a quote that describes you and your writing?
Vivian: I write about imperfect characters because I’ve experienced God’s grace.

LaToya: Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
Vivian: It would be great to see Alfre Woodard bring my character Moni to life.

LaToya: When did you decide to become a writer?
Vivian: I started writing as a pre-teen so it was more of a compulsion than a decision. I believe writing is one of my gifts and I’m very grateful for it.

LaToya: Do you write full-time or part-time?
Vivian: I write part-time. For now.

LaToya: Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
Vivian: I don’t have a special time. The busyness of my days forces me to write whenever the opportunity presents itself.

LaToya: Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?
Vivian: I don’t write every day. There have been times when having a word count goal helped to get me unstuck.

LaToya: Where do your ideas come from?
Vivian: I get ideas from my life experiences, stories I hear and some just come to me. I think that’s the God factor.

LaToya: Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
Vivian: I work with an outline but I’m open to exploring new storylines.

LaToya: How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?
Vivian: I think I’m more committed to the craft of writing. I’m learning what works and how it works.

LaToya: What is the hardest thing about writing?
Vivian: For me, it’s sitting down and getting it done. When you have deadlines, you can’t wait for inspiration to strike.

LaToya: What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?
Vivian: I had to make sure that the message of redemption and restoration were not lost because of the sensational nature of the subject matter.

LaToya: What is the easiest thing about writing?
Vivian: The joy it brings.

LaToya: How long on average does it take you to write a book?
Vivian: It took about six months to write the first draft of Secret Places.

LaToya: Where can you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
Vivian: Healthy and still writing.

LaToya: What advice would you give to your younger self?
Vivian: Child, relax. There’s really a season and a time to every purpose under heaven.

LaToya: Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
Vivian: I would have loved to meet Martin Luther King. A conversation with him about his journey would have been priceless.

LaToya: If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?
Vivian: Redeeming Love, by Francine Rivers. Because it’s a beautiful story.

LaToya: What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Vivian: Keep reading, keep writing and keep praying. Truly, the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong.

Book Spotlight: Another Woman's Husband by Angel Mechelle

Excerpt

“I care Dré. It’s not the time to be exposing us. Remember, we
said we were going to do things slowly?”
“I’ll call you and let you know what’s up,” he said.
Deep inside I knew that Dré would be able to convince Neecy
to come home. She didn’t really want to leave Dré. Otherwise
she would have done it before I ever came into the picture. He
cheated on her so many times before and she was still there.
I just hoped when she did come back, she didn’t decide to go
ballistic on me. I lived in the hood, but I wasn’t a fighter. The last
confrontation I’d had with another woman left me with a broken
wrist. I didn’t want to go there again, and Neecy looked like the
type to break wrists.
When I picked the kids up from Auntie’s, she insisted we
have a talk. She sat down on the couch, and made room for me
beside her.
“How was your weekend?” she asked.
“It was nice Auntie,” I said, nervously taking a seat.
“Bree, I know that you were with that woman’s husband,” she
said without hesitation.
I had lied to Auntie about where I was going. I told her I was
going out of town with Nikki, Eric, and some other friends, but
she obviously didn’t believe me.
“Auntie, please I don’t want to get into all of that right now,”
I said, as I crossed my legs Indian style and placed an oversized
pillow across my lap.
“I just need to know Bree. I need to know what is going on,
just in case something happens. This whole thing could get out of
hand. Have you ever heard of Betty Broderick?” Auntie asked.
“Yes, I have heard of her I watched the movie on Lifetime,
but this situation is not like that.”
Auntie was referring to Betty Broderick, a former San Diego
socialite whose husband left her, and started a new life with
his young assistant. Betty went crazy, and ended up killing the
husband and his new wife in their own bed while they slept.
“You know I will hurt somebody about you. You are my Baby,
but at the same time… you are wrong Bree, dead wrong.” Auntie
placed her hand on my shoulder and sighed.
“Auntie whatever happens, I can handle it,” I said.
“I don’t want to preach to you, but you do know that you are
committing adultery right?

Meet Angel Mechelle

Armed with an active imagination and a notion for DRAMA, Angel Mechelle was finally able to share her love for storytelling with the world when she was accepted as a contributing author in the Anthology "Hood2Hood, presented by Best Selling Author, Shannon Holmes (Author of B-More Careful). Impressed with her talent Mr. Holmes offered to publish Angel's debut novel, Another Woman's Husband, which quickly became a favorite among readers. The opportunity has opened many doors in the literary industry for Angel. She completed two short stories featured in the Anthologies "Flirt" and "Divas, Diamonds and Dollars".

Angel's love of writing comes from a deep passion for storytelling. She enjoys giving readers a story they can relate to and present a situation that allows them to become invested in the story and connect with the characters. Angel's stories are often inspired by true events, which readers often relate to. This premise inspired Angel to create Chick Life Publications, where stories and characters are created to entertain and inspire readers. Angel introduces memorable characters who readers laugh at, cry with, love and hate the all at the same time. Sharing her vivid imagination and her "crazy" life experiences with readers is what drives Angel to continue to write stories which resonate with her readers due to their true to life perspective.
