Raised by a single parent, she determined to break the generational curses in her family.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?
My ambitions for my writing career is one day make New York Best Sellers list. One day, I hope to open a book store. Also, I want to work with low-income youth to help them read, write and publish their own stories. To feel the flow and the passion to my writing. To share my knowledge for others to feel better.

Which writers inspire you?
Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, James Baldwin, and Tyler Perry

What are you working on at the minute?
currently working on my first novel entitled: Secret Church Wives-Sinful Desires

What genre are your books and why?
All of my books are inspirational and motivational. Why I love to write. Everyone is different so obviously, my reasons are going to be different from others. Writing isn’t just putting words on a page or screen, it’s all of my thoughts, feelings, and ideas displayed in a coherent way; I do this not only for others but for myself. I write because it’s the best, and sometimes the only way, to fully understand what I’m feeling and why. I write to make the things that don’t make sense a little more comprehensible. I write to help make myself feel better. I write to inspire and motivate dreamers. I write to leave a legacy for my future children and next generation.  I write to motivate people and to help make them feel better about themselves. I write in hopes that others will realize that they really are not as alone as they may feel. I write because the thought of making just one person feel better, or happier or simply just smile, makes me happy.

In 10 words or less can you create a quote that describes you and your writing?
Never Give Up, Perseverance, Dreamer

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
For my first novel, I would love for Oprah Winfrey to be the lead character. Maya Angelou to narrate the novel and Tyler Perry to direct the movie.

When did you decide to become a writer?
I became a writer in 2012

Do you write full-time or part-time?
Part-time

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
My full-time job is an Academic Advisor at a local University. God gives me the vision to write at crazy times. I usually like to write at the end of the day or Sunday evening.

Do you aim for a set number of words/pages per day?
My number I aim for per day is about 500-1000 words.

Where do your ideas come from?
My ideas to write come from God, my personal experiences, family members, and church.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just to see where an idea takes you?
Work from an outline.

How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?
Since 2015, when I released my first book. I would have never imagined, that I would have written 4 books.

What is the hardest thing about writing?
There are a LOT of challenging things about writing, as I’m currently working on one. I’m on page 75 and am still far from done and I don't mean length-wise. In my opinion, creating complex characters Organizing is definitely the most difficult for me. After that, deciding the main plot would be second. that win over an audience is. For me, the hardest thing is staying focused.

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?
Love writing but it still works. I find the hardest thing to writing is to spill all the juicy secrets in book 1. The novel is a three-part series.

What is the easiest thing about writing?
For me, the easiest part is writing the rough draft. Once I have characters and a plot outline I can write the rough draft of a novel in four to six weeks and I enjoy doing it. What happens before and after writing the rough draft is far more difficult and time-consuming.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?
It takes me about 6 months to write a book from start to publishing.

Where can you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
I see myself in 5 years opening a publishing company, on New York Best Sellers list, and writing my 20th book.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
would stay a kid forever!! Real friends will be there for the long haul. Don't sweat the small stuff! Life as an adult is much more difficult. Have fun! Don’t follow the crowd. You were born 2 lead! Don't let others dampen your passion! Passion is what will drive you to live your life to the fullest and enjoy what you do.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
would love to meet Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry.

If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?
wish, I was the original author For colored girls who have considered suicide/When the rainbow is enuf by Ntozake Shange. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings Maya Angelou. Oprah Winfrey. Just like the like my favorite author and writers, they didn’t allow their upbringing stop them from writing. Writing isn’t just putting words on a page or screen, it’s all of my thoughts, feelings, and ideas displayed in a coherent way; I do this not only for others but for myself. I write because it’s the best, and sometimes the only way, to fully understand what I’m feeling and why. better, or happier or simply just smile, makes me happy.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Write what you're passionate about not what's on trend. Develop a thick skin. There will be rejections. Those are only a few people's opinions. When someone tries to close a door on you, kick it in. Becoming a published writer isn't easy and taking no for an answer will get you nowhere fast. I would take writing classes. Feedback from both teachers and your peers is essential. Read a lot and often. And read different genres, not just the one you write. The more you can develop your story before you write it, the easier it will be. Write often. Even if it's not your "work-in-progress" it will get the juices flowing Set realistic goals for your writing.

PROLOGUE
Two Years Ago
Toni Reed sensed the next few minutes would not go well for her.
As soon as Paul Lambert’s handsome face turned red, she knew. His blond side-swept bangs lay plastered across his forehead. The charmer’s usually playful blue eyes gleamed bright with anger. He shouted, “Were you trying to sabotage me?”
“No!” She backed away from Paul’s piercing stare bumping into the chair. “No,” she yelled, her eyes wide with fright. It felt like the air had been sucked out of the room. This must be what it feels like to be in the room with a wild animal where any sudden movements could result in a strike. The crazy thing was Paul had never laid a hand on her before. She tried to convince herself he would calm down and walk away.
I’ve seen him like this before.
Toni glanced at the wall behind Paul. Less than a month ago, she watched in horror as he punched a hole in the wall above his entertainment system. Books and DVD’s crashed to the floor as Paul swept his arm across the top shelf. The hole had since been covered up with one of her paintings, all the items neatly put back in place and not a word said about the incident.
Taking a deep breath, she tried to appear calm. “You know I would never do anything to sabotage you. I want you to look good. We talked about this last night. Remember? You said it was an important point.”
Paul stepped forward, “I had it under control. You’re trying to say you could do it better. That I don’t know what I’m doing. You made me look like an idiot.”
That’s not how I remember it. Why is he blowing this out of proportion?
Her heart pounded when she saw Paul’s clenched fists. Toni shook her head. “No, no…I just wanted to make sure you told him the benefits you could bring to his company.”
“You wanted me to appear like I was desperate and didn’t know my own company. He will never invest now.”
“That’s not true. You did a great job and —” Before she could finish her sentence, Paul grabbed her by the shoulders and pushed her against the wall. She cried out in pain as her head bounced off the hard surface.
“You ruined everything! I saw the look on his face.”
The back of her head throbbed as she tried to focus. She wheezed, “What is wrong with you?”
Paul’s hand came across her face.
He’s crazy!
Anger surged. She was no match for Paul’s size, but she had to get away from him. Lifting her right knee, she shoved it up as high as she could into his groin area.
Paul groaned from the impact and loosened his grip on her arm. “You — “
Toni wrenched her arm away and wasted no time moving around him. She had to get out of there. Her bag was on the coffee table. She grabbed it and moved quickly to the front door. As soon as she reached it, she felt a strong hand grab her shoulder.
She screamed and turned, swinging her heavy bag across Paul’s face.
He stumbled from the blow, but it didn’t prevent him from reaching. He wrapped his arms around her body. Toni felt her feet lift off the carpet. She struggled and screamed. Suddenly her body was thrown across the room, crashing into the coffee table.
She cried out in pain as she felt something snap in her arm.
Through her tears, she saw Paul looming over her.
God, help me!

Book Spotlight: Are You Still Down by Paulette Jones

The me I am is the me I was born to be. It's my thing it's also how I live if I wasn't born to be this person then I wouldn't be here. It's that simple and it makes life so much more fun to live. It even drives my writing and the things I develop and released. My personal specifics are simple really, graduated high school, got my degree, found a job and started figuring out life. The realization that thirty-five was knocking on my door led me to sit down with my laptop and get out all the thoughts running through my head. For years like many others, I'm sure I found every reason not to write and now I can't seem to find a reason to stop. I'm a positive mind even when life isn't headed down a positive road anyone that knows me would agree with that. I genuinely love escaping into the world of words. May they be the ones of a new or favorite author or my very own I love the entire process.
I’m the one people would roll their eyes at for sure I love everything from Harry Potter to Fifty Shades. Maya Angelou made me read, but Authors and writers like Terry McMillian, Rochelle Alers and Brenda Barrett made me love the art of putting a story together. I’m pretty sure it’s been said but there is a beautiful art behind the written word in all forms and it captured me around ten years old and hasn’t let go yet. No matter what is going on in my life a good book can make everything better and that for sure is why I love to read, even more why I love creating with the hope that my words can be an escape for someone.

“Taylor where have you been I have been calling you all day…are you working on your birthday you better not be I will come right to that hospital you know?”
“Case, calm down that is not good for you at all, I’m not working I didn’t work at all today does that make you happy.

Oh, well sorta well what are you doing then you didn’t sleep the day away did you?”
“No, actually I’m in East Linden I’ve been here all day actually since last night.”
“Wait…are you with a guy did you…are you sleeping with someone and not telling me.” She actually seemed shocked by the notation as if it was no possibility of me being with a guy which made me laugh.

“You know one of the best ways to go into labor is sex maybe you should get your husband to help you with those hormones of yours…and no I’m not sleeping with anyone…. I’m actually with Brandon.” She was quiet so long I had to check to make sure she was still there. Once she was responsive again I explained how I ended up with him and how he had made my day so relaxing and special without a lot of fuss or headaches.

“Taye I have to say this and you can’t get mad at me because it's true…. you and Brandon well can’t you see that you just keep ending up in this same place…stop fighting it Taye just let your heart do what it wants. You two belong together and if you keep tip-toeing around one another because of what happened in the past then you will never truly be happy you always fussed and fussed about me and Justin and until the day I said I do I didn’t really believe it. Taye you have to know that is where your heart belongs...Don’t make any hard decisions but just try Taye.”

Jeff Emmerson and Robert Yehling - Beyond ADHD - Release Blitz HTML

Non-fiction - Mental Health
Date Published: August 16, 2017
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Beyond ADHD weaves Emmerson’s personal story of his ADHD diagnosis, exploring along the way the latest medical, scientific and societal explanations and tools for managing and living with the condition. Including interviews with a number of experts at the forefront of next-generation ADHD diagnostics and treatment, he questions the cookie-cutter way ADHD is commonly diagnosed and treated. Suggesting that the list of symptoms often used to identify ADHD can be attributed to many other disorders and conditions, he explores how and why ADHD diagnoses have increased by 50% in the last ten years.

Emmerson advocates a different approach to ADHD, arguing that it should be a diagnosis of exclusion rather than the other way around, and that we must look past the label, recognizing that individual symptoms vary and treatment plans should be better tailored to the individual. He examines mental and behavioral issues from all sides, including the possibility that nurturing – rather than trying to alter or suppress – the active, “360-degree” mind is a viable way for those diagnosed with ADHD to realize their gifts and lead purposeful lives.

About the Authors

AUTHOR BIO: Jeff Emmerson

From the depths of mental despair to one of social media’s premier spokespeople for mental health issues, Jeff Emmerson is a veritable “Rocky” in the field. Jeff has written for and been interviewed by some of the world’s top online magazines regarding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), including Everyday Health (featured on AOL Health) and Additudemag. He also enjoys one of the world’s largest social media followings for a non-medical professional on the subject, with more than half a million Twitter followers and a video blog (YouTube Channel) that includes more than 200 different postings on various aspects of ADHD. Many of the top medical experts in the field, as well as specialists in behavioral therapy, vision therapy and neuroscience, regularly post and correspond with him as part of their collective goal: finding a path beyond today’s ADHD “epidemic”. Some share their perspectives in Beyond ADHD.

Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, Emmerson began speaking publicly to raise awareness of ADHD and mental health issues in 2011, following a suicide attempt and resulting ADHD diagnosis. (Three years earlier, he had lost his brother Ryan to suicide). In 2013, after another bout of suicidal ideation, he focused more greatly on his higher purpose, took to social media channels and began blogging to reach an even larger audience. He also took out an old manuscript he had written about his life, which further developed into Beyond ADHD.

Emmerson is a passionate advocate for mental health, and fostering a deeper understanding beyond the accepted symptoms that have led to more than 30 million North Americans taking ADHD medication. He seeks to come up with solutions that return society to a place of compassion, humanity, community and empathy. This perspective forms the structure of Beyond ADHD.
Emmerson will be embarking on a public speaking and signing tour in Fall 2017 to draw greater awareness to the diagnostic and societal issues of ADHD, to create greater public discourse in North America and worldwide, and to roll out the many forward-thinking solutions that he and many of the world’s foremost experts on behavioral, mental health and neurological issues and conditions have been discussing and beginning to utilize.

Remember your first crush? How your heart raced and your cheeks flushed whenever you saw him? Jessie Baxter does, and it’s happening again. Ten years ago, despite her best efforts, Lee Archer wanted to be just friends. Now, he wants more, but Jessie's still recovering from a psycho ex-husband. Can she learn to trust again and make her first crush into her last love?

Elizabeth McKenna’s latest novel will have you remembering the angst of high school, the grief of a failed relationship, and the happiness of true love.

Excerpt

The smell of bacon roused Jessie from an early morning dream of being chased across a cold, moonless beach. The feet that carried her for miles on her runs were useless in the deep sand. Every time she stumbled, her panic grew until her body no longer responded to commands. Rubbing at her heavy eyelids, she blew out a deep breath, and the last remnants of the nightmare faded away.
She squinted at the clock on the nightstand and groaned. It seemed like she had been asleep for mere minutes. After saying goodnight to Lee, she had stared at the dim stars on the bedroom ceiling and waited for sleep to bring her a needed reprieve from her messed-up life. Instead, her mind had bounced between Billy and Lee, wondering what either of them was up to and why she had to be involved.
When her stomach rumbled in appreciation of the smoky sweet smell, she sat up with a jolt. Lee Archer was in her mother’s kitchen making breakfast, and it smelled damn good. She jumped out of bed and twirled in a circle, unable to decide what to fix first. Her frizzy curls stood out in every direction, and her breath reeked from last night’s garlic-laced meal.
She grabbed a pair of running shorts and checked the hall before dashing to the bathroom. A few minutes later, she emerged with her hair in a messy bun and her teeth scrubbed to the point of drawing blood.
In the kitchen, Lee stood at the stove pushing eggs around a pan and wearing last night’s rumpled clothes and a shadow of a beard. Jessie clamped down on her bottom lip. It was too much to take in.
“You’re awake. I left you some coffee.” He gave her a crooked smile before turning his attention to the frying bacon.
She eyed her morning drug on the far side of the kitchen and willed her legs to move in the direction of the coffee maker. After dumping three sugar packets into a cup, she poured the heavenly brew with a sigh. Looking up, she frowned at Lee’s amused expression. “What? I like sweet coffee.”
“Breakfast will be ready in a minute. Can you put down the toast?” He nodded with his chin at the toaster.
While she slept in, Lee had set the table, cooked eggs and bacon, poured juice, and cut three mums from her mother’s garden for a centerpiece. Yeah, making toast was the least she could do.
“What do you do for a girl the next morning when she actually sleeps with you?”
Lee’s eyes ran up and down her body, and then something akin to a growl came from his throat. Maybe she should have put on sweats instead of shorts.
“I like cooking. Remember Denny’s restaurant? I think if I hadn’t become a cop, I would have been a chef.”
They settled at the table and ate in silence for the first few bites.
“Is it OK?” He pointed at her plate with his fork.
She nodded in appreciation. “Better than OK. I usually grab a granola bar for breakfast. This is a real treat.”
“I was thinking we could swing by my place so I can get cleaned up before heading to the station. I’ll need you to make a statement before I can run the knife for prints.”
Her gaze went to the kitchen island where the hunting knife sat wrapped in the plastic bag. “Billy was arrested for a bar fight in college. Would his prints be in the system for that?”
“Should be.”
“If it’s his knife, then what?”
“We’ll bring him in for questioning.”
“Can you hold him? Like put him in jail?”
“That will be up to the DA and the judge.”
She nodded. “Even if he did this, he can still . . .”
Putting her fears into words would make them too real, but from the grim look on Lee’s face, she didn’t have to.
“You could file for a restraining order,” he said.
“Would that help?” She wasn’t sure she had the strength for more legal action against Billy. Like most divorces, theirs had been ugly, full of half-truths and name-calling. She had even secretly wished him dead at one point to put an end to it all.
“To be honest, probably not, but it would make arresting him a lot easier if he keeps stalking you.”
Stalking her. She hadn’t thought of it like that, but it was what Billy was doing. Her knuckles whitened as she gripped her fork. Three years. Before this weekend, it had been three years since she had talked to her ex-husband. Why couldn’t he move on? If their love had been so wonderful—if they had been soulmates—he never would have cheated on her. That was the one thing she had never understood when he fought the divorce. It was obvious they weren’t right for each other. Why couldn’t he see that?
She nibbled on a piece of bacon, while her mind searched for new answers to old questions. After a few more bites, she pushed her plate away.
“Changed your mind about my cooking?”
“It was wonderful. I guess I don’t have much of an appetite this morning.”
“How about I clean up while you shower?” Lee gathered their dishes and headed for the sink.
She shook her head in disbelief. “How are you not married?”
Over his shoulder, he gave her a smile that ignited small fires in several sensitive areas of her body. “I have no idea.”
“Well, the cockiness might be a turnoff,” she said, covering her desire for him with a dose of sass.
He looked down at his crotch. “There’s nothing wrong with my—.”
She held up a hand. “Stop!”
His low chuckle sent flames over her cheeks. He turned on the kitchen faucet and squirted dish soap into the sink. “Go take that shower.”
Jessie darted from the room. It would need to be a cold shower, she thought, as she pounded up the stairs.

Though her love of books reaches back to her childhood, she had never read romance novels until one Christmas when her sister gave her the latest bestseller by Nora Roberts. She was hooked from page one (actually, she admits it was the first love scene).

She had always wanted to write fiction, so she combined her love of history, romance and a happy ending to write Cera's Place and Venice in the Moonlight. Her short story, The Gypsy Casts a Spell, is available for free on her website http://elizabethmckenna.com/. She hopes you will enjoy her first contemporary romance novel, First Crush Last Love, as much as others have enjoyed her historical romances.

Elizabeth lives in Wisconsin with her understanding husband, two beautiful daughters, and a sassy Labrador. When she isn't writing, working, or being a mom, she's sleeping.
