Author Interview with LaToya Martin

What are your ambitions for your writing career?
As of now, since I'm a new author, I'm focusing on expanding and establishing a loyal readership. I also want to be a versatile author who writes books that cater to adults as well as children. Ultimately, I want to leave a mark in Christian fiction and be a blessing through my writing.

Which writers inspire you? I love Michelle Stimpson! She has an amazing writing style and has been a consistent presence in the African American Christian Fiction genre. I'm also inspired by writers such as Kimberly Cash Tate, Norma Jarrett, Francine Rivers and my childhood best friend, Toni Shiloh.

What are you working on at the minute?
I'm currently working on the sequel to Pain's Purpose and a children's book.

What genre are your books and why?
Christian Fiction, my relationship with Christ is extremely important so what's in me manifests in my writing.  I also believe that even though my novel is fiction the message of hope in Christ is embedded within each page. I pray that it falls into the hands of someone who doesn't know God so the seed of God's love and power can be planted in their life!

In 10 words or less can you create a quote that describes you and your writing?
Aspiring to showcase the love Christ in everything I write.

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
I think Dawn-Lyen Gardner would bring Talia William to life!

When did you decide to become a writer?
I've loved to write since childhood. I did a lot of writing in high school but don’t think I ever imagined it leaving my spiral notebooks. I actually started writing Pain's Purpose in high school and worked on it through the years when I could since I was busy with school. Last year, over ten years since its inception, I decided to start the publishing process and make my dream become a reality.

Do you write full-time or part-time?
Part-time

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
I wish. Unfortunately, my schedule is so hectic and it's hard for me to write every day. I try to take advantage of my vacations, I'm a teacher, to get a lot of writing done.

Do you aim for a set number of words/pages per day?
I don't. I'm a "go with the flow" kind of writer. When something comes to me, no matter where I am, I jot it down and find time to merge all of my random ideas into a cohesive flow.

Where do your ideas come from?
I consider my writing a gift from God. I'm just a vessel that He uses. I also pull from life experiences whether personal or from people that I know.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
I just see where the ideas take me. I try to have an outline or brainstorm ideas but that never works for me!

How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?
I think I'm better able to express myself than in the past. I strive to write in a way which makes it easy for the readers to envision the characters and become engrossed in the storylines.

What is the hardest thing about writing?
For me, it's finding the time to sit down and write. It can be challenging to balance work, being a single parent, church involvement, an attempt at a social life 😉and writing.

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?
Deciding whether to wrap up the story in one book or create a series.

What is the easiest thing about writing?
Writing, in and of itself. Once I get into a groove it comes easily.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?
I've only written one and it took over ten years! I'm positive that the sequel won’t take nearly as long especially since I have a lot of people on me about finishing it. I can’t keep the readers waiting too long!

Where can you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
Hopefully, in five years, I will have figured out the best way to effectively reach my target audience and the art of marketing my books. I pray I have a strong readership and will have published several books.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Make time for your love of writing and don’t be afraid to take the leap to self-publishing.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
Anyone who knows me can tell you my answer would be Michael Jackson! I love his music and wish I could have went to one of his concerts before his passing.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Gain knowledge from others who have been successful. Your book may be great, but if you don’t have the necessary tools or motivation to market it, it will just be book enjoyed by family and friends. Believe in your work but remain humble. Take chances and put yourself/your book out there.

Author Interview: Gigi Wilkins

Hi Gigi Wilkins, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
Thank you LaToya for this opportunity! I was born and raised in Houston, TX. I’m a mother of 3 and grandmother. I’m an empty nester and adjusting to single life. I began working as a freelance actress and writer in 2007. Prior to relocating to Georgia in 2015, I devoted a lot of my time to mentoring, volunteering at church, and supporting organizations dedicated to improving the lives of women and children. My professional background spans over 20 years in various facets of healthcare, training, emergency management and quality assurance.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?
My goal is to demonstrate and create a voice identifying the systemic effects of child abuse, unhealthy relationships, and exposure to domestic violence. I sincerely hope to encourage others to remain vigilant in pursuing their dreams.

Which writers inspire you?
My first love is poetry. As a child I loved reading Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes. I’m inspired by so many, especially Nikki Giovanni and Maya Angelou. I also love reading Carl Webber and Eric Jerome Dickey novels.

What are you working on at the minute?
I’m continuously focused on improvement in every area of my life. I have two more books, scheduled to be released titled, “God Stop Changing My Plans” and “Mama Used to Say”.

What genre are your books and why?
Creative Non-Fiction. I want to create a platform for women and children to walk confidently into their purpose by having a palpable reference of resilience.

In 10 words or less can you create a quote that describes you and your writing?
Put God first, with relentless determination, possibilities are endless.

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
Gabrielle Union and Idris Elba. I admire them both. They are versatile, beautiful people of color who seem to be very genuine and passionate about their craft.

When did you decide to become a writer?
It’s been woven into my fiber since childhood. One of my elementary teachers helped me assemble my first book of poems for a school project and I had so much fun doing that. As far back as I can remember, family and friends would ask me to write all types of letters, resumes, etc. My primary duties as a professional, consisted of creating and writing policies and training manuals. In times of tragedy, journaling has been my source of healing and I find so much peace. Writing allows me to focus on the positive in every adversity.

Do you write full-time or part-time?
I write every chance I get. I keep pen and paper with me, especially after my computer crashed.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
Not really, my day normally begins about 3AM with meditation. Meditation is like caffeine, I can’t function without it.

Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?
I’ve tried both, it made writing feel more like a job. So now I set aside 2—3 hours daily.

Where do your ideas come from?
I’m so thankful that I’m able to laugh at myself and accept who God has made me. Most of my work is derived from personal experiences and life lessons.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer to just see where an idea takes you?
I work to an outline. It helps me maintain structure.

How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?
I’m a work in progress, my motivation is intrinsic. I’m very open to all genres of writing, the process of becoming a published author has peaked my interest in producing and writing screen plays.

What is the hardest thing about writing?
The hardest thing about writing is containing my thoughts and ideas.

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?
There were obstacles, simply because I’m a novice at this. The challenges motivated me, made me even more determined and really catapulted me out of my comfort zone.

What is the easiest thing about writing?
The process of writing is easy, especially since I know this is just what I was meant to do.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?
I work on several projects at a time. I set personal timelines to maintain balance and focus.

Where can you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
In 5 years I will be 50! I’ve been so BLESSED to come as far as I have. I’m ready for where ever God takes me.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Invest in yourself, invest in your future, and never settle.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
Oprah Winfrey. My mother and I watched her show and joked about one day being a guest. She has been a trailblazer and inspiration for many, especially women of color. I think Oprah is a great teacher who doesn’t compromise value.

If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. I read this book as a teen, and didn’t fully comprehend the metaphoric expressions of racism, sex, and literacy. Reading the book as an adult really illuminated the emotions I carried as a child, but wasn’t able to articulate. I could almost hear music reading this book.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
PRAY and JUST do it.

Author Interview with Tesa Erven

LaToya: Hi Tesa, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
Tesa:  Thank you LaToya for this opportunity. I was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. I currently live in New Jersey with my husband and two kids. I enjoy writing, reading and (shower) singing.

LaToya: Which writers inspire you?
Tesa:  Back in the mid-nineties, I read Brenda Jackson’s first romance novel; Tonight and Forever. After that, I wanted to create my own love story. I like creating twists of characters being unknowingly connected to each other. It’s a small world and I prove that in my writing style.

LaToya: What are you working on at the minute?
Tesa: I just finished writing the sequel to my debut novel which is scheduled to be released soon.

LaToya: In 10 words or less can you create a quote that describes you and your writing?
Tesa: “Tesa writes love stories with romance, suspense and unexpected twists.”

LaToya: Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
Tesa: Actually, I never thought about whom would play the lead character in my book but I could tell you for sure that Queen Latifah could definitely play the supporting character, Sabrina. She has a strong voice that tells it like it is.

LaToya: When did you decide to become a writer?
Tesa: I first started writing about ten years ago. It has always been a live long dream of mine that has finally come true. I am an avid reader especially of fiction novels. One day, I just thought to myself, “I can do it.”

LaToya: Do you write full-time or part-time?
Tesa: Since I do work a demanding full time job – I write in my spare time. Usually late at night is when I’m most productive. When everyone in the house is asleep, that’s my quiet time.

LaToya: Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?
Tesa:  I don’t have a set amount of words/pages that I aim for. My mentor suggested that I write at least fifteen minutes a day and that’s what I strive to do.

LaToya: Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer to just see where an idea takes you?
Tesa:  I prefer to see where an idea takes me. I keep a notebook with me on the go. I start a story in there before scanning it into the computer. I still have a thing for the old fashioned scratch and scribble… I write everything down on paper.

LaToya: What is the easiest and hardest thing about writing?
Tesa: I enjoy developing new characters and giving them a voice because each one is uniquely written.  The part of the process I dislike would be sentence structure. As a writer, when the words are flowing I tend to forget to stop and add punctuations. Before I know it, I will have one long paragraph with a few run-on sentences and as a result I have to go back and change it.

LaToya: What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?
Tesa:   I have a sequel to The Loose End coming out soon and the hardest part about writing that particular book was finding the desire to do it. I never thought it would be a continuing story but since becoming published, I understand now that you appreciate giving the readers what they want.

LaToya: What is the easiest thing about writing?
Tesa:  For me, the easiest part about writing is when you have a muse that you can build or base a character on. My childhood best friend of 30+ years is inspiration to Sabrina’s character in my book. She happens to have those same character traits of always being there and guiding me that it just makes the story come together in a nice even flow.

LaToya: Where can you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
Tesa:  I wear many hats (mother, wife, working full-time) and adding author to the mix has become a balancing act. I’m learning how to manage my time so my family can see the added value whether it be now or 5 years from now as I fulfill my dream.

LaToya: What advice would you give to your younger self?
Tesa:  DO NOT GIVE UP! Though it tarries, the vision is near, be patient and wait for it!
- Habakkuk 2:2-3

LaToya: What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Tesa: Proofread your own work even if you have an editor or an actual proofreader that has read it for you. Invest in yourself, read it again until you get to a point where you feel it is the best you can do.

Book Spotlight: Peace Poems (Created to protect peace) by Amani Nigia Williams

Peace

 A peaceful world

That’s all I want

That’s all I see

No more killing

No more fights

Enough is enough

We need to try

To do better

To be better

And to love one another

World peace is all I want.

Black Lives Matter

Our lives matter

Because we are all the same

It shouldn’t matter

If we come from the South or North

All that matters

Is our personality and what we can do

It shouldn’t matter

If we pay for food with an EBT card

Or a black card

We are all still eating the same food

It shouldn’t matter that

I have long, black dreads

I am not a criminal

You look at my appearance and

Already think you know

My whole life story

Well, news flash, you don’t

Just like you, we have dreams, too

Like becoming a doctor

Or the President of the United States

We are important and we will fight

For our rights

Our skin color doesn’t define us

We do.

Geraldetrick: Originally, I’m from Shreveport, Louisiana.  I currently reside in Savannah, Georgia.

Geraldetrick: Yes, I definitely knew that I wanted to be a writer since I was 19 years old.

LaToya: When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?

Geraldetrick: My latest book is titled, “Here Am I, Send Me”.  It was inspired from my life and a supernatural moment that occurred in my life.  “Here Am I Send Me” is actually biblically inspired from the scripture of Isaiah 6:8 also.  In my book I basically captured the obstacles that I face growing through adolescence as a African American male.  I wanted to be an example as well as a voice that speaks about the events that occur in typical African American males lives through adolescence.  The “Here Am I, Send Me” title ties into my story at the point of the Supernatural moment, in which God gave me purpose and the assignment of bringing this story forward to the public.

Geraldetrick: If you are trying to become an Author, it doesn’t matter if you have to start over on writing your book 3 or 4 times or more, As long as you keep trying and dont give up, then you will eventually reach your goal.
