Author Interview with Melody S



LaToya: Hi Melody, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
Melody: Thanks for having me! I write fiction and murder suspense short stories and novels and am the author of Murderess Obsession, Marrying The Family and Lust For Revenge. I own my own publishing company, Dream Cloud Publications and also write for Delphine Publications. I am a mother of four and the wife of a military veteran who suffers with Lupus SLE. I am a living organ donor who donated a kidney to my ailing husband two years ago and we are both doing extremely well! 

LaToya: What are your ambitions for your writing career?
Melody: I’d love to hit the NY Times Bestseller List and also to write for television and film.

LaToya: Which writers inspire you?
Melody: Sister Souljah, James Patterson, and Terry McMillon.

LaToya: What are you working on at the minute?
Melody: I’m working on the sequel to Lust For Revenge.

LaToya: What genre are your books and why?
Melody: My genres are fiction and murder suspense. I write mystery suspense because I love a good mystery to solve but I also love the surprise endings!

LaToya: In 10 words or less can you create a quote that describes you and your writing?
Melody: “Melody S.’ work is refreshing, new, and just what the industry needs!”

LaToya: Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
Melody: I’d like for Nia Long to play Diamond, Idris Elba to play Taimel, and John Travolta to play Phil.

LaToya: When did you decide to become a writer?
Melody: When I placed, “write a book” on my bucket list and I did it. I realized that I was great at it and that I loved the process.

LaToya: Do you write full-time or part-time?
Melody: I just write when I feel like it.

LaToya: Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
Melody: If I am working on something I normally write all throughout the day except when I’m on Mommy duty.   

LaToya: Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?
Melody: I used to but I don’t anymore.

LaToya: Where do your ideas come from?
Melody: Everything around me! People I know, television shows and movies I watch...just everything.  

LaToya: Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you
Melody: I usually have the ending first and I just start writing to set events in motion to satisfy my ending.

LaToya: How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?
Melody: I think I’ve gotten so much better with time. I understand the craft much better and the business end of the industry as well.

LaToya: What is the hardest thing about writing?
Melody: Having the time with everything else that goes on in my life.

LaToya: What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?
Melody: Writing the Phil character because he kept making me angry with the things he was doing.  

LaToya: What is the easiest thing about writing?
Melody: Coming up with fresh ideas to entertain my readers.

LaToya: How long on average does it take you to write a book?
Melody: About 7 to 8 weeks.

LaToya: Where can you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
Melody: A NY Times bestselling author who also writes for Tyler Perry and other big names in the industry.

LaToya: What advice would you give to your younger self?
Melody: Have more fun!

LaToya: Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
Melody: I’d like to meet Malcolm X because he is my favorite super human.

LaToya: If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?
Melody: The Harry Potter series because it has really taken off over the past few years.

LaToya: What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Melody: Research! Research! Research!
