Book Spotlight: Lovin’ the Enemy Part 1 by Author Imani

Excerpt from Lovin’ the Enemy Part 1

Jullian watched from a distance as four men exited the house with two body bags. He had parked his car across the street from the house, not wanting to bring too much attention to himself, but his discomfort intensified when London’s parents glanced his way. London’s father eyes met Jullian’s dead on. He saw the grief in them and more importantly, the distrust. Jullian wasn’t as concerned with the looks he was throwing his way as he was with the way that tall, very familiar looking brother had his arms wrapped protectively around London. He was standing a little too close for comfort. Jullian then instantly recognized him as the guy who busted his way into his office, along with some other uniformed officers, flashing his badge the night London was attacked. He was one of the childhood friends London spoke about.

Jullian glimpsed the fierceness in his eyes when he saw London in her condition. He recognized it for what it was, because he too had the same feeling. It was the need to protect her, to embrace and comfort her, to wipe away the fear in those big eyes. He couldn’t stop the jealousy once it started gnawing at him. He couldn’t bring himself to look away from the guy who touched her so affectionately.

London seemed to have just realized that Jullian didn’t follow her across the street. She walked toward him. Tears streaked her beautiful face, which was devoid of makeup. He was with her when she got the call. They had just fallen asleep after many hours of lovemaking. He was amazed at how she felt so warm, so secure in his arms. As soon as she got the call, a cold, harsh reality set in. He had been sleeping with the woman whose family his father had a vendetta against. The very thought of that sickened him.

He didn’t allow himself to think about that when he went to see her last night. Staying away from her was literally becoming a torture. If he had any common sense at all, he’d run far away and never look back, but looking at her now, he knew that was impossible to do. Jullian’s heart went out to her when he saw how reddened her eyes were. His gut ached. When she stood before him so small and yet again so vulnerable, he wanted to hold her, but instead he kept both hands buried in his pocket. She lifted her head, eyeing him seeming unsure.

 “I’m sorry,” she murmured.

“Don’t apologize,” he said. His eyes met the broad shouldered cop’s again. He was staring daggers at Jullian, his hands fisting and unfisting. Jullian chose to ignore him and focused on London. As much as he wanted to be there for her, he felt like he’d overstayed his welcome. He took her small hands into his own and squeezed them gently.

“You know what,” he said, his voice thick with raw emotions. “I’m gonna head out. Maybe it’s best if you’re alone with your family. They need you.”

She seemed disappointed at first, but must have thought better of it.
“Ok, that’s fine,” she said. “I’ll just catch a ride back with my sister later.”
They eyed each other for a moment. Her lips parted, and it would have been the most natural thing in the world to kiss her, but nothing about this situation was normal; plus, her family was staring at them oddly from across the street, and he hadn’t been formally introduced to them. It just didn’t seem right.

He glanced across the street and met that guy’s eyes again. What the hell was with this prick? The look that he gave him had Jullian wanting to head across the street and punch him between the eyes.

“Catch you later,” he said to London finally, and pulled away feeling like he had already made a few enemies.

Meet Author Imani

My name is Author Imani aka Felicia Holloway. I was born and raised in Alexandria, VA. I have two sisters and a brother. Unlike most kids around ages 11 and 12, I had a thing for books instead of toys, though I did have toys. The library was and still is one of my favorite spots to hangout. I love the color blue, particularly royal blue. I love to shop, read, write, draw and travel.

I like to read urban fiction especially books written by Zane, Kiki Swinson, Niobia Bryant, Tiphani Montgomery, street literature, crime thrillers like the ones written by James Patterson and Lisa Jackson, and mystery and suspense just to name a few. I like to write urban fiction and I plan to venture into crime thrillers, Christian fiction and mystery/suspense in the future.
